About The Economist Newspaper
The Economist made its debut as the London Financial Guide on January 10, 1888, before rebranding as The Economist on February 13 of the same year. Its mission was to advocate for “The Sincere Financier, the Genuine Investor, the Reputable Broker, the Authentic Director, and the Lawful Speculator.” Initially, it was a concise four-page publication catering primarily to the financial community in the City of London. During this era, its main competitor was the more audacious and slightly older Financial News, founded in 1884.
On January 2, 1893, The Economist adopted its distinctive light pink paper, setting itself apart from the similarly named Financial News. Opting for unbleached paper, initially cost-effective, led to higher expenses due to special dyeing requirements over time.
